After his time as a captive within The Initiative, Spike begins having hallucinations of Buffy. He is unsure whether these hallucinations are a result of the chip that they put in his brain, or if he is simply going mad. These hallucinations punish him when he harms humans, and attempt to coerce him into fighting his vampiristic nature. Meanwhile, when Buffy is resurrected after her sacrifice at the end of season five, she begins having similar visions of Spike, who helps her fight her depression.
